Anna Celander/Kristina Enhörning     Sweden

Title:   55*40'38.2''N 13*24'22.5''E

Style:  This work was created specifically for the exhibition Nordic Nature, and the physical place where we began the work on our artist book has                exactly these coordinates. In fact, we started physically in nature, in a beech forest, hoping to be able to portray it in the shape of a book.

How to convey the bodily experience of being in nature with a book and its binding?
            Structures; sharp, soft, fog, rain...
To run your hand over a beech trunk...
See the future through a twig hole in a piece of bark…

The book wants to encourage you to experience; to see, hear, and feel the magic of Nordic Nature. The materials used for this artist book are              exclusively Scanian, except for the leather on the back, which is reindeer skin from Lapland, at the other end of Sweden.
The technique is called the Dos rapporté binding (Ben Elbel).

Title:   JÄÄMEREN LAULU (2024) / Ingeborg Arvola

Style:  The story:  "Jäämeren laulu" tells the story of a Finnish woman in the 18th century. She sets off on a long journey to the coast of northern                    Norway. She hopes to find a better future there. Her destination is Bugøynes, where the sea is said to foam with cod.
The design:  The first thing I think of when I think of the North Norwegian coast is fish. I can smell the fish, and I can see the fish on drying              racks in front of my eyes.
My book:  The binding is a Broken back Bradel binding.
The covers of my book are covered with a laminate of thick, coloured Mingeishi paper. The fish and the headbands are made of sanded                        leather-paper collages. The back is covered in leather and the marbeled endpapers show the foaming sea.

Style: Traditional parchment binding with the binder´s self-made parchment from sheep. Plain white endpapers, handsewn linen headbands and                    green coloured top edge. Title on a matching green leather label.
This is my first attempt at both making my own parchment and binding a parchment book. The parchment became a little unevenly thick,                    brown and stiff. It made the process of binding the book more difficult. Still, I like its old-fashioned look, and I think it suits Linnaeus.

Title:   Fjällflora by Gjærevoll, Olav & Jørgensen, Reidar (1953); Colour drawings –

Dagny Tande Lid; Swedish translation and adjustment – Sten Selander

Style:  Book in Rubow binding and a Japanese four-sided case with flaps.
In this flora of mountain flowers and plants most northern countries are represented. This was important for me when searching for and                       choosing an item to work on expressing my version of “Nordic nature”.
This book consists of single sheets held together with cords in a similar way like the original metal staplers I removed, spine is glued.                         Flyleaves of Satogami-paper, leather of goatskin and a Japanese handprinted patterned paper for the cover. The book edges are painted in                   golden Gouache water colour.
The four-sided case with flaps is made of paper board covered with similar leather and Japanese paper as above and a thicker paper for the                 other details.
Colours of green, yellow and brown have been chosen to resemble nature colours as well as the original soft cover of the book and you can                 imagine “flowers” in different colours in the cover paper patterning.

Title:   Birch leaf book / There's a handwritten poem in the book: "Där björkarna susa" from the poetry collection "Skymningslandet" by Viktor                     Sund (1915)

Style:  A stub binding with a handwritten poem.
My inspiration is the birch tree (Betula pubescens), with its white stem and fresh green leaves. We have one just beside the porch at our                       cottage in Sweden, just north of Stockholm. In the early spring we deeply regret having the tree there, dusting its yellow pollen everywhere.               But it’s all forgiven and forgotten in the summer: The breeze makes the branches and twigs dance and the leaves twirl. The birds love to hide             in the greenery. Another species, the Mountain birch (Betula pubescens subsp. Czerepanovii), is extremely resistant to cold winters. And in                 Sami culture the birch tree is of very big importance.
I wanted to capture the beautiful shape of the leaf with its veins. In my head I heard a song they played on the radio when I was a child in the             1970’s: “Där björkarna susa” by Hootenanny Singers. The title indicates the sound you hear from the birch trees when the wind blows.
When researching the song, I found out that the lyrics is a poem written by a Swedish-Finnish poet and teacher, Viktor Sund (1891-1966). It               was published in his poetry collection Skymningslandet (Dusk lands) 1915. Music by Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) in 1916. Almost 60 years             before I first heard it!
The shape is cut out by hand. Green Harmatan vegetable tanned goat skin. I have wet tooled the leaf veins, first with a blunt tip followed by a             pointed tip, to get a shadow impression.
The covers are lined with Japanese paper. The doublures and the white papers are my handmade paper (pulp made of linen and some cotton).             A few words of each verse from the poem are written on each page and a leaf of Japanese paper marks the end of a verse.
Doublures and Japanese paper coloured in green.
The bookbinding method is a stub binding.
Kerstin Öhman is a bookbinding student (third year) at Leksands folkhögskola, Sweden.

Title:   Saari Josta Olen Poissa / Tuija Välipakka

Style:  Coptic stitch combined with long stitch sewn with linen thread. Cover paper is painted by the binder with printing inks and water-based                     colour. Endpapers and guards of the sections are Nepalese lokta-paper, Japanese paper and Fabriano. Title is blind tooled on goat skin. Detail             on the back cover is dyed paper yarn.  The book contains visual, even some pictorial poetry, constructed by distorting letters. The poems tell               of an island, a summer refuge the author inherited from her father. Memories and the present are layered and merged with the island’s nature.             The binding has an overall blue feeling of mourning, comforted by vibrant greens and golden light playing in the dense forest of the open                   spine. The leather title element represents the island and acts as a connecting bridge to the deceased loved one. The detail on the back side is               a reference to the spruce needle the author has picked from the island and attached by hand on one of the pages.

Title:   Dr. Gislesen og hans pasienter (Dr. Gislesen and his patients) / Torgrim Sørnes

Style:  Dr. Gislesen, born in Iceland in 1750, studied medicine in Copenhagen, Denmark and ended up in Drammen, Norway, as Buskerud county's               first physician – "amtsphysicus". Here he lived and worked until he passed away in 1804. Gislesen’s story is a kind of Nordic story, though a             very dark one. Dr. Gislesen was despised by the population of Drammen, loathed by his superiors and feared by his patients, hated by his                   colleagues and slandered by the few friends he had. He lived a life of drunkenness, adultery, lies and charlatanry, embezzlement and false                   invoices, lawsuits and libel suits.
The book is bound as a full leather binding in hand-coloured goat leather with calf leather onlays, gold-tooling and paste decorated edges. To             bring the nordic nature in to this, the design is inspired by the herbs used as medicines at the time, mixed with pharmaceutical symbols of                   some of the favourite remedies of the 1700's such as quicksilver, arsenic, and alcohol. To reflect the ill-natured Dr. Gislesen the symbols of                 silver, gold and phlegm are added as he was both greedy and lazy.
